finished my first Warre hive today. I am a new bee keeper, but acquired 4 hives this fall. sort of fluke, but none the less we have 4 active hives and plan to do splits for our TBH, both Kenya and Warre . the hives we have were abandoned 2 yrs ago...... so we expect them to be healthy and a source for swarms and splits every year.

Funny thing about abandoned hives they might not have had bees in them when their previous owner left them behind and a swarm may have moved into them. Best of luck and welcome to the club.
